I've been playing with blogs for the last month or so and I've really enjoyed what I'm able to do with them. It opens the internet up on a totally different level.

Instead of me writing an article, posting it online and spending the next couple days trying to get the search engines to take notice, all I have to do is hit post and the blog does all the work for me.

The best part is that it not only lets the search engines know I've posted new information, but the search engines are so excited about ranking new information that they rank it in a matter of minutes.

I've seen a lot of people posting that it only takes 5 minutes to set up a blog however, a 5 minute blog will be about as affective as a teaspoon of water in the Sahara desert. It'll take months just to get the design right. You need to test, test and test some more. The look needs to be customized and unique and at the same time guide your site visitors in the direction you want them to go.

Once you've got the custom blog design in place the work really starts. You need to make at least 10 posts a week for the next year in half to build up your community. The misunderstanding of how blogs work is the reason we see so many fail.

Many people see blogs as an inexpensive alternative however, the physical build, setup, design and time spent is in line with what a website would cost you. The real investment is in the time it takes for your blog to make an impact. The blog design is just the start.
