Should I start a blog? Why? How does blogging work to make me more money? It always amazes me how many of my professional, and often very successful friends know so LITTLE about building a web business. As a matter of fact, I know lots of doctors, lawyers, accountants and other professionals who are getting KILLED in the marketplace over the past couple years, simply because the younger and more web savvy recent grads are taking their marketing mojo to the web....and leap frogging the local learning curve in a hurry.
The simple truth is this: If you are a professional, EVEN in a highly paid industry or vocation, if you don't learn how to use social strategies to build your business, you WILL be left behind.
A few ways that a blog can help your business, regardless of what you do for a living?
Blogs are PERSONAL: (and transparent) If you maintain your own site, it's sort of tough to pull the wool over peoples eyes. They see "you" for who you are, and what you're about. If you're a good, honest and empathetic person who truly cares about your clients needs.....there is NO better strategy that sharing your thoughts, motivations, ideas and inspirations with a create and captive audience of customers.
Blogs are Interactive: People leave comments. They ask questions. Gone are the days of "layers" between the guy at the top of the faceless corporation...and the nameless customers who buy his products, and pay his (or her..:-) salary. The truth is, people buy from people they like. And having a voice is ALWAYS empowering for your customers and clients. Blogging is a great way of opening up a dialog, in a friendly and cost efficient way....that almost ALWAYS creates bonds that transcend those you can build on the phone or via a traditional web site.
Blogs are ALSO great for Search Engine Optimization: Google loves blogs. Posts are often indexed in minutes...and traffic is immediate. You can augment a blog with Twitter, Facebook and a whole bunch of complimentary strategies, and if you're smart....you can DOMINATE any industry you choose, simply by using the power of integration.
